Episode 03: Creating a Sound Sculpture with Composer Alba Triana

In this episode, composer and multimedia artist Alba Triana takes us on a journey into her world of sound sculpture. Alba explains how she pushes the boundaries of sound and nature by creating vibrational objects and resonating spaces.

About Alba Triana

Alba Triana’s artistic practice focuses on exploring the inherent intelligence of nature. Her artworks—including sound and light sculptures, vibrational objects, and resonating spaces—are hybrid and cross the boundaries of diverse fields. Artburst Magazine describes her as a “sound sculptor explor[ing] the interface between natural science and music… she combines rigor and poetic finesse.”

After earning her Bachelor’s degree at Javeriana University (Colombia) and achieving Academic Excellence and Merits, Triana became a Fulbright scholar. Next, she obtained a double emphasis Master’s degree in Composition and New and Integrated Media at California Institute of the Arts. Finally, she pursued Ph.D. studies at the University of California, San Diego, for Music Composition.

Triana’s work has been featured internationally in the US, France, Spain, Colombia, Mexico, Moldova, and so on. She received the 2023 Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation Award (Iberoamerica), the Civitella Foundation Fellowship (Italy/US), South Arts State Fellowship (U.S.), and was the winner of awards in Colombia, such as IDCT National Composition Contest, National Electroacoustic Music Contest, “Otto de Greiff” National Contest, and French Alliance Best Exhibition of the Year Award. She has obtained commissions, residences, and grants from Kronos Quartet, Pro Helvetia (Switzerland), American Composers Forum, Oolite Arts (U.S.), GMEB (France), and the Ministry of Culture (Colombia).
